On Sunday 22nd February, hundreds of runners will lace up and hit the streets for one of the island’s biggest sporting events – the Malta Marathon. Participants will be tackling a full 42KM marathon, a 21KM half marathon, a 21KM walkathon, and a 1.5KM race for the little ones.

The scenic (and challenging!) route kicks off in Rabat, passing through Mtarfa and heading down through Ta’ Qali and Attard. Runners will continue along the Central Link and Mrieħel Bypass, make their way through Marsa, Ħamrun, Floriana and Pietà, before taking the coastal stretch from Msida to Gżira and finishing off at Tigné Seafront in Sliema.

With runners crossing much of the island, a number of major roads will be temporarily closed from early morning through to the afternoon to ensure everyone’s safety. If you’re planning to be out and about, here’s what you need to know.

Road Closures & Times

  • Rabat to Mtarfa – 6:00AM to 8:30AM
  • Mosta – 7:30AM to 9:00AM
  • Ta’ Qali – 7:00AM to 10:00AM
  • Attard (Centre Link – direction Valletta) – 8:15AM to 11:00AM
  • Mrieħel Bypass (direction Valletta) – 8:30AM to 11:30AM
  • Marsa (direction Valletta) – 8:30AM to 11:30AM
  • Qormi to Ħamrun Bypass (direction Marsa & Valletta) – 8:30AM to 11:30AM
  • Marsa to Valletta – 8:30AM to 11:30AM
  • Pietà Seafront (direction Valletta) – 8:30AM to 11:45AM
  • Msida Seafront (direction Valletta) – 8:30AM to 11:45AM
  • Ta’ Xbiex & Gżira Seafront (direction Valletta) – 6:45AM to 12:00PM
  • Tigné Seafront – 4:00AM to 3:00PM

If you’re driving on Sunday, plan ahead, allow extra time for your journey, and consider alternative routes where possible. Public transport users are also advised to check for temporary route changes.

And if you’re not stuck in traffic? Head down to the route and cheer the runners on – there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of marathon day in Malta.

Will you be running or driving on Sunday?
