It has been a relentless weekend across the Maltese Islands, with residents and visitors enduring some of the hottest conditions of the summer. Temperatures soared while the real feel climbed to a sweltering 42°C, making even simple outdoor activities feel exhausting.
The intense sunshine, high humidity, and almost non-existent cloud cover created oppressive conditions from morning until sunset, prompting many to seek shade and stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day.
Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come!
According to Maltese Islands Weather, the heatwave is expected to reach its peak on Monday and Tuesday, with maximum temperatures of 42°C and 41°C respectively. However, it is the real feel of 45°C that will make these two days particularly brutal.
The combination of extreme heat and humidity will push conditions into dangerous territory, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration, especially for vulnerable people, outdoor workers, and anyone spending prolonged periods in the sun.
The forecast, however, offers some welcome relief as the week progresses. Aptly described by Maltese Islands Weather as going ‘from brutal to bearable,’ the change will be gradual but noticeable. Wednesday sees temperatures easing slightly before a more significant drop arrives towards the weekend.
The week begins with a scorching 42°C / 30°C, but by Saturday, temperatures are expected to settle at a much more comfortable 29°C / 23°C, accompanied by fresher northwesterly winds. While sunshine will remain dominant throughout the week and rain is not expected, the cooler airflow will make conditions far more pleasant for outdoor activities.
Until then, health authorities continue to advise everyone to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the afternoon, wear light clothing, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
After an unforgiving weekend and two more intense days ahead, many will be eagerly counting down to the welcome return of more bearable summer weather.
Have you had enough of the heat already?
