So you’re travelling to a popular tourist destination in the Mediterranean when the high season is just over. It was the only time you could come out on holiday but you’re beginning to wonder what it might be like - there’s a reason why the season’s over after all. You don’t need to arrive to find out you’re completely unprepared. The important things you’ll want to know are right here.

What's the weather like in Malta in early winter?

Changeable and unpredictable. Is that not helpful to know? A heavy downpour in the morning might be followed by rather hot sunshine. Enjoy the variety and the flexibility of going with the flow according to what the weather may bring. Expect a 20°C high and a low of 14°C with 81 mm rainfall across about half of November's days.

Can you swim in Malta at this time of year?

Yes. The sea is definitely warm enough. Whether you’ll want to dip in will depend largely on what’s going on outside the sea. The challenge is not getting in but getting out. Emerging from the water to a catch of wind can feel rather chilly, while a run on the beach in the warm sun can be a fun way to dry out.

What clothes to pack?

A little bit of everything. From a singlet to a rain jacket. Checking the weather forecast just before you come might be helpful, but don’t leave your bikini at home because they don’t always get it right and you might regret it. Just pack these essentials and then anything else you feel inspired to pop into your bag.

Are there things to do?

Far from being just a sea and sun destination, Malta is rich with history and culture. Although small, in Malta there are hundreds of things to do. These include several prehistoric temples, fortified cities, stately homes, other historic sites, museums, churches, interactive centres and theme parks, not to mention the restaurants, tours and natural beauty to enjoy.

What are the pros of visiting Malta in autumn and winter?

It’s that mid-season time when it’s not too hot and not too cold, and you can really enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to activities. In fact, November is a wonderful month that can host a pleasant variety of outdoor activities that may surprise you. And, there are also some very good reasons to enjoy autumn in Malta
