Although we might usually associate the start of spring with the 21st March, meteorological spring actually starts today, on the 1st March.
This means that the days will soon be getting longer!
Today the sun is setting at 5:57 PM but by the end of this month, the sun will be setting at 7:23 PM - hurrah for later sunsets!
The main difference between the spring we’re used to, and meteorological spring is that the latter is based on the annual temperature cycle and lasts till the end of May.
On the other hand, spring as we know it is based on the position of the Earth in relation to the sun.
Last year's meteorological spring was drier and hotter than usual, with the temperature on a few days in April hitting the high 20s, and less rain than usual in March - only time can tell whether this year will bring a meteorological surprise!
Are you happy that meteorological winter's over?
