Hawn tal-hobz! Check out this shot of the island’s most popular tradition back in the day
It has pretty much died out since then.
Every local will vouch that Maltese bread is possibly the best in the world. Back in the day, the staple food would be distributed around the islands in a bread van. Nowadays, the tradition has widely dwindled with bread being available at the local grocery store. But, some localities like Gudja still have this tradition going.
“Life in the old village of Gudja is very quiet with hardly anyone around in mid-morning. But then, honking a custom tuned horn, a van drives by leaving a trail of freshly-baked bread and sweetness that is felt from far down the road,” says local photographer Jean-Paul who captured this beautiful shot.
“Gorg ‘tal-hobz’ goes around the old village of Gudja selling bread and traditional Maltese sweets and savouries from his van every morning. And the people pop out from seemingly nowhere and gather behind to buy their dailies.”
“Seasonal sweets that are traditionally made during Lent are the almond-based Kwarezimal as well as the bread pudding. For 1 euro you will get a slice of pudding that is the size of a brick. And it will be the best you’ve ever had.” 100 per cent!
