Happy Valletta Day! Malta’s historic capital city celebrates 459 years since it was founded
Today, 28th March, marks the day that Malta celebrates the annual Valletta day.
Malta’s capital city was founded 459 years ago by the Knights of Saint John. It was named after the Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette in honour of him managing to defeat Malta during the Great Siege of 1565.

He was the one to lay the first stone of the grand city but died before seeing it completed.
Recognised as a World Heritage Site, Valletta has witnessed some of Malta's most important historical events during its four and a half centuries.
Unfortunately, it also suffered immensely after being constantly hit by bombs during World War II.
Despite being one of the smallest cities in the world, it remains one of the most historically rich and concentrated areas globally.
Considered as one of the most beautiful cities and destinations in all of Europe, Valletta was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2018. The city also happens to be the sunniest city in all of Europe - little surprise there!
Valletta is also home to 28 churches where five different local feasts are celebrated every year.
