Great news! St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral in Valletta will be getting some much-needed TLC
This is fantastic news! St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral will be getting a facelift thanks to various contributors who have banded together to get this project going. Now, we know, Valletta has a number of cathedrals and churches and you’re probably wondering which one it is. St Paul’s is the beautiful Pantheon-looking one with the tall spire that can be seen in all the pretty snapshots of Valletta.
Save the Valletta Skyline announced the great news this morning, stating that a contract has been signed for “urgent work to start on the restoration of St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral.” The contract is worth €3 million and is “the culmination of many months of architectural inspections and technical tests,” which “identified worrying signs of deterioration threatening the stability of the tower, the spire and the stonework throughout the cathedral, making this work and absolute priority.”
The non-profit organisation also said that the works will begin in the next six weeks, kicking things off with scaffolding being put up around the 67-metre bell tower and spire, and the removal of the six church bells.
“This is an important first step in our journey to saving the spire,” they said, thanking the public who also contributed to fundraising appeals and in doing so has managed to fund one fifth of the project. Yay us!
We can't wait to see how it turns out!
