Grand Master’s Palace celebrates return of historic tapestries with Charles & Ron exhibition
Charles & Ron have crafted a number of fashion pieces inspired by the magnificent tapestries
A special exhibition will take place at the Grand Master’s Place this weekend to celebrate the homecoming of its magnificent tapestries following a two-year restoration project.
People will get to feast their eyes on the historic masterpieces and find out how they’re influencing contemporary fashion, with Charles & Ron creating a number of pieces inspired by the tapestries.
One dress will also be donated to Heritage Malta’s national collection.
The tapestries were once part of the gioia of the Spanish Grand Master Ramon Perellos, who took office in 1697. Gioia were gifts that every newly appointed Grand Mater presented to the Order of St John following their election.
Depicting exotic scenes inspired by lands that had only recently been discovered at the time, they were commissioned in 1708 from the Gobelins manufactory in Paris and arrived in Malta two years later.
Restoration works were entrusted to the De Wit Royal Manufacturers of Belgium, internationally renowned for their expertise in this field.
The exhibition launches tomorrow, 27th June, and will run until 30th August. The palace opens from Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm, with last admission at 5:30pm.
