Every October, Malta’s sister isle gets her very own celebration to commemorate Gozo Day, or Jum Ghawdex as we say in Maltese. And yesterday was that day! Celebrations were held at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Gozo’s capital of Victoria and at the Ministry for Gozo.
The celebrations stemmed from an event that happened way back in the 18th century. Between 1798 and 1801 during the French occupation, Gozo was considered an independent state after Archpriest Saver Cassar lead an uprising against the French. To this day, this event is celebrated to commemorate the courage and bravery shown by the locals during this difficult period.
Also, a Gieh Ghawdex was implemented, which awards Gozitans who have contributed to society in different aspects of life. This year, Michael Grech was awarded Gieh Ghawdex, who served (and still does) in the financial sector and also had an active role in the Victoria Scout Group and helped out the Malta Community Chest Fund. Charles Bezzina was also given this same award for his involvement in the research and history sector, particularly in relation to Gozo, and has worked tirelessly to make sure that the island’s history is well-documented.
In light of celebrating Gozo Day, here are 7 must-see spots on the island that are totally worth a visit if you’re popping over!
1. Dwejra
Dwejra was and still is a top spot to venture to, even though the window collapsed in 2017 (along with our hearts). People still flock to see the window that once was, giving a sense of ultimate nostalgia to the place.
2. Cittadella
Situated on the top of the hill in Victoria, the citadel is one heck of a beauty, especially since it was given new life thanks to an extensive restoration project. Make sure to also visit the shelters that give a look back to wartime Gozo and the incredible silos on the opposite side.
3. Nadur Belvedere
I mean, isn't she just a beaut? From this point in Nadur, you can see views of Malta and Comino across the sea and well, do we need to convince you any more?
4. Tal-Mixta Cave
This cave in Nadur has been a go-to chill spot lately (and an Instaworthy one too). The cave overlooks Ramla l-Hamra and boasts breathtaking views of the sea, sand, and sky that paint an incredible picture.
5. Ta’ Pinu National Shrine
The Basilica in Gharb is one heck of a building, and is a definite stop on your tour of Malta's sister isle. As local customs go, heading to Ta' Pinu to say a prayer and leaving a donation would help your difficult life situations and recurring bad luck. #TheSehtaIsReal
6. Wied il-Ghasri
Ah, this little valley is one beauty you don't want to miss. Situated in the town of Ghasri (but also kinda in the middle of nowhere), Wied il-Ghasri is the perfect spot for a quiet afternoon to chill while touring Gozo.
7. Church of the Madonna of Lourdes
This church is possibly one of the first things you'll see as you disembark the Gozo Channel Ferry. Situated atop a hill close to the Mgarr Harbour, this church has the perfect view of the Maltese waters and isn't camera shy!
Where will you be heading?
