Start thinking about where you’ll be spending the post-COVID government €100 vouchers because they will start being distributed as from today! Economy Minister Silvio Schembri shared the news in a press conference this morning about the vouchers.
He shared that they used blockchain technology to ensure that there is no abuse of these vouchers. The vouchers are linked to a person’s ID card, which means that only one set of vouchers will be printed per ID. It was noted that 440,000 people in Malta and Gozo over 16 years of age will be receiving a set of vouchers to redeem until 30th September, after which, the vouchers will become invalid.
The red voucher can be redeemed at any MTA-certified restaurant and accomodation. The blue one can be redeemed at the following establishments: hair and beauty salons, retail shops (clothes, footwear, jewellery), shops with domestic items, sports clubs, museums, arts and culture centres, band clubs among others.
People will be receiving the vouchers via registered mail and will have to sign for them (one person can sign for the entire household). In case that no one is home, the postperson will leave a note which needs to be taken along with the person’s ID to their nearest post office. The vouchers will be activated 24 hours after delivery.
The vouchers are indeed transferrable to other people, just in case someone cannot make use of them (for example, bed-ridden people). Once again, the government reminds the public that the vouchers can only be used once and the bill needs to be a minimum of €20. The physical voucher needs to be presented to the establishment which will keep it once used. Establishments will receive the money from the vouchers within 24 hours.
It was also noted that the vouchers have security features to ensure that they are the proper ones issued by the government. This includes a UV light method of verification: the €20 will light up and so will the right edge.
