Gale force 9 returns! Malta prepares for a very windy weekend and 5°C minimum real-feel
It looks like February is coming to Malta with guns blazing, as the islands await a very windy and unsettled weekend, with the night between Saturday 31st January and Sunday 1st February expected to bring gale-force winds reaching Force 9 – almost on par with those experienced during Storm Harry.
Alongside the powerful winds, very rough seas are expected. While winds should ease slightly to Force 6–7 later on Sunday, sea conditions are likely to remain rough well into late Monday, so anyone planning sea travel is advised to take extra caution. Coastal areas may also become hazardous, and staying well back from exposed shorelines is strongly recommended.
Rain will add to the drama, with Saturday bringing an 85% chance of between 6mm and 15mm of rainfall, followed by Sunday with a 55% chance of 2mm to 9mm. As if that wasn’t enough, Saturday night is forecast to feel bitterly cold, with a minimum real-feel temperature of just 5°C – definitely a weekend for layers, scarves and hot drinks.
Luckily, conditions are expected to calm down on Monday 2nd February, with no rain forecast so far, lighter winds, and a slight rise in temperatures, offering a much-needed breather after a blustery start to the month.
