From red to orange! Weather warning persists across Malta and Gozo this Friday the 13th
Rough seas and gusty winds across the islands, with ferry cancellations to boot.
It’s been a blustery start to Friday the 13th across the Maltese Islands, with strong winds continuing to batter exposed areas throughout the early morning.
The Civil Protection Malta has confirmed that winds may occasionally reach gale force in exposed locations until 13:00hrs today. An Orange Warning remains in effect, and the public is being urged to take extra care.
Authorities are advising residents and visitors to:
- Avoid working at heights, including rooftops, balconies, scaffolding, and other exposed structures
- Keep away from shorelines, breakwaters, and coastal areas due to rough seas and strong waves
- Secure loose outdoor items that could be displaced by sudden gusts
- Drive with caution, especially in open areas where crosswinds can be particularly strong
The strong winds have also disrupted sea travel between Malta and Gozo – particularly inconvenient for those hoping to make it to the sister island for the Carnival celebrations!
The Gozo Highspeed service has been cancelled for the day, with operations expected to resume this evening, with the first trip from Valletta at 19:45 and from Mġarr at 20:45. All subsequent trips are set to run as scheduled.
Meanwhile, the Valletta ferry service to Sliema and the Three Cities has been suspended for the entire day due to rough sea conditions. Small boats = rocky journeys!
So far, the Gozo Channel is still operating, but ferries are using the more sheltered Comino route, which may result in delays. So if you’re heading to Gozo, you might want to pack a crossword.
There is light at the end of the tunnel, though! Winds are expected to ease significantly later this evening, dropping to Force 3 to 4, potentially clearing the way for smoother crossings and calmer conditions heading into the weekend.
Stay safe, and if you’re planning to head out later, it might just work out after all.
Are you enjoying the chaos in the skies, or hoping for calmer days?
