Red poppy season is here! Exploring the vibrant flower spread across Malta & Gozo
The poppy became a symbol of World War I remembrance!

Emma Galea

If you’re out and about exploring the Maltese countryside, chances are you have come across a poppy field or two!

It is truly a sight to behold when you see hundreds of red poppies all flowering next to each other.

The plant, a native to North Africa and certain Eurasian countries flowers between March and June.

Throughout history, the poppy has had many different uses. Its flavour is sometimes used in many different food items such as cake. One can even extract a red dye from its petals that has been to be used in wines.

But perhaps the poppy is mostly known as a symbol of World War I. The plant bloomed extensively in the trenches and in ‘No Man’s Land’. It’s beauty in such horrors led to it become a sign as a way for the many that came after to never forget all the people that lost their lives in this tragic war.
