From notes to knowledge: Experience a curator’s insight into natural history this May
What really happens after a specimen is collected in the field? How do rough notes and quick sketches evolve into lasting scientific knowledge? These questions take centre stage during ‘Nature in the Archives - Curator’s Tour’, an engaging evening event at the National Museum of Natural History on Friday 15th May from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.
Designed for adults and students aged 12 to 16, this guided experience offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of natural history research. Led by an expert curator, the tour traces the journey from fieldwork to archive, revealing how observations made outdoors are carefully documented, analysed, and preserved for future study.
Participants will explore a fascinating range of materials, including original field notes, handwritten journals, preserved specimens, and detailed scientific illustrations. These records highlight the meticulous work of generations of naturalists who have dedicated themselves to understanding and classifying life on Earth.
Beyond simply viewing objects, visitors will gain insight into the scientific processes that underpin natural history. The session sheds light on the importance of careful observation, accurate recording, and critical thinking - skills that transform raw discoveries into meaningful contributions to our understanding of biodiversity.
The tour also offers access to remarkable items not typically explored in depth, making it a unique opportunity for curious minds to connect with the hidden side of science.
Tickets are available online through Heritage Malta or can be purchased from any Heritage Malta museum.
