The fort closed down in 1956.
Marsaxlokk’s Fort Delimara is currently undergoing cleaning and consolidation works in the run-up to its eventual re-opening for the public.
The past years have seen the historical site becoming desperately run-down, particularly due to coastal erosion.
2022 has, however, seen extensive works get carried out all across the fort. These include the cleaning of underground chambers and the removal of dangerous and alien structures placed within the fort – but that’s not all, as Heritage Malta has also installed a better and safer electricity and water system.

The fort’s security has also been taken up a notch.
Heritage Malta Director Noel Zammit expressed how, even though there still is a lot of work to be done, the public can safely look forward to the day when the fort reopens its doors for guided visits.
Fort Delimara was built between 1876 and 1878 by the British during their time in Malta. They built it to have better visibility near the coast of the Marsaxlokk harbour.
The fort itself includes four cannons – the only ones of their type that can still be found in their position across the world.
The historic fort was still being used until 1956, until it ended up being used as a farm for more than 25 years, leading to its unfortunate decay. Thankfully, it fell into the hands of Heritage Malta in 2005 and is now finally being restored for all to enjoy and appreciate.
Are you planning on visiting when it eventually opens?
