This plan will hopefully make Malta greener and more sustainable.
The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects has just launched the first phase of an exciting new mobility project.
The plan will see the introduction of new bicycle networks and more infrastructural investments in urban areas to provide better options for travellers who prioritise active mobility.
The routes will aim to connect green spaces and busy nodes so that commuting between one place to another becomes an efficient way to travel by walking and cycling.
This will surely be an opportunity to continue ameliorating Malta’s urban spaces and transform them into places for all.
The new bicycle lanes will be connecting Smart City to Saint Julians. New lanes that will create connections between the Blata l-Bajda, Msida, Valletta, and Pieta areas, are also set to be introduced.
Additionally, mobility hubs facilitating multi-modal transportation will be established as the planned connections not only connect commuters between one place and another but also give users the possibility to switch between different modes of transport along a route.
This will be done by adopting infrastructure that is appropriate and safe for the intended user and by choosing the connections to be direct and continuous.
Rota, the eNGO advocating for safe bicycle use in Malta, has been in constant communication with Infrastructure Malta, helping the authorities create the best way forward.
“Rota is excited about the launch of the new bicycle network, as it provides a convenient mode of transportation for people in Malta, who generally do not travel more than 5-10 km”, the eNGO wrote in a statement posted to their social media.
“The plans shared so far look promising, but one can only be certain once the infrastructure is implemented and tested”, they continued.
What do you make of such a plan?
