Malta is known to have an extensive and utterly jaw-dropping history that is definitely worth exploring, but rarely can one experience the discovery of that history! This week, Heritage Malta is inviting the public on a rare opportunity to step back in time and see the ongoing archaeological excavations at the Marsaxlokk site of Tas-Silg.

On Thursday 11th July the organisation, in collaboration with the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta, are offering the public the chance to observe the current investigations taking place at Tas-Silg.

Tas-Silg is considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in Malta, and dare we say, in the Central Med, housing the remains of more than 4,000 years of structures, most of which used as religious temples.

It is on this very site that the famous temple of Ashtart mentioned by Cicero in his prosecution speech against Caius Verres was located. Throughout the years, both the Missione Archeologica a Malta and the Department of Classics and Archaeology at University have conducted extensive excavations here. So, why is Tas-Silg being excavated again? You’ll just have to attend to find that mystery out!
