Heatwave incoming! Malta and Gozo to face heat wave up to 41°C till Friday, followed by strong weekend winds
Malta and Gozo are bracing for an intense summer heatwave this week, with temperatures soaring as high as 41°C and ‘feels like’ temperatures reaching a sweltering 43°C – peaking on Tuesday 22nd and Friday 25th July.
While Wednesday might offer a slight break with a high of 36°C, the humidity will still make it feel like 40°C, so don’t count on too much relief.
And the heat won’t let up at night either – overnight temperatures will climb to 28°C, with Friday night expected to be the warmest of the week. Looks like we’re in for some seriously balmy summer evenings!
As opposed to the typical summer spike caused by high pressure or stagnant weather, this heatwave’s a little different. Instead, cold air from over Europe is forecast to push down toward the Sahara Desert, displacing a mass of extremely hot desert air northward toward the central Mediterranean. That means Malta will be right in the middle of a migrating desert for several days, and yes, that’s exactly what it’s going to feel like!
During this heatwave, it’s extra important to:
- Avoid direct sun during peak hours (11 AM – 4 PM)
- Stay hydrated – keep that water bottle close!
- Wear light clothing and sunscreen
- Keep an eye on vulnerable individuals, including pets
If you’re sweating just reading this, there is some good news: a shift in weather is expected just in time for the weekend. From Saturday 26th to Monday 28th July, Malta and Gozo will experience a drop in temperatures, thanks to northwest winds reaching Force 5 to 6.
But before you start planning your boat day or beach picnic, keep in mind that rough seas are expected during this period. Red flags may be raised at popular swimming spots, so always follow local safety guidelines and lifeguard instructions.
Try keep your cool in the coming week!
