The Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF) features the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) in a programme themed “Between Heaven and Hell.” The concert opens with Arvo Pärt’s meditative “Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten,” showcasing his minimalist tintinnabuli style, based on early chant music. The simple, almost spiritual canon of Pärt’s texture is contrasted by the complex and jagged rhythms of Ruben Zahra’s violin concerto composed for virtuoso Austrian soloist Daniel Auner. Auner returns for Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso,” blending lyrical melodies with virtuosic flair. The program concludes with Franz Liszt’s “Two Episodes from Lenau’s Faust” and Modest Mussorgsky’s dramatic “Night on Bald Mountain,” both exploring darker, diabolic themes.
