Kaiser’s series of paintings, unified by the recurring motif of the prickly pear cactus plant (Opuntia ficus-indica), known locally as il-bajtra tax-xewk, offers a narrative rooted in both personal and cultural exploration. The prickly pear, though an imported species, has thrived in Malta and has become emblematic of resilience, adaptation, and a feature that many associate with Maltese identity. This symbolism resonated deeply with Kaiser, himself an outsider, seeking to integrate into a new landscape.
The exhibition’s title, Smuggler, reflects Kaiser’s experience as an artist navigating a new cultural environment. Like the prickly pear, which took root in foreign soil, Kaiser brings his diverse background - shaped by living in multiple countries - to Malta, embedding new elements into the existing artistic dialogue. His works seek to entertain and intrigue, with words such as “transpose”, “divert”, and “reveal” encapsulating his artistic ethos. Yet, despite the vibrant reimaginings, Kaiser approaches his subjects with a genuine appreciation for Malta’s cultural heritage.
With Smuggler, Eric Kaiser presents an exhibition that is both a personal journey and an artistic homage to his new home, inviting viewers to engage with tradition through a fresh, playful lens.
