The jet set life!

Nicole Parnis

Ever wanted to travel the world and attend the best music festivals at the same time? Well, one Maltese photographer is doing exactly that! At just 23 years old, Emma Tranter has landed her dream job, jetting off from one fabulous location to the next! We managed to have a chat with Emma within her busy schedule to get the lowdown on what her job entails, and get an insight into all the best bits. Here's what she had to share!

Hi Emma! We're quite jel of your amazing job! Can you tell us a bit about what your work involves?

"My work involves a wide spectrum of things. I currently work with three famous music artists named Nervo, Jamie Jones and Sigala. I am the Tour Manager and Tour Content Creator for Nervo, Social Media Manager & Content Creator for Sigala & also a Content Creator for Jamie Jones. My main role and objectives are to create content of all the ‘life’ that happens on tour. I document the journey of the artist’s life throughout the day continuously whilst travelling. This work continues throughout the culmination of the shows as well as during and after!"

"I try to be as creative as possible to capture unique and unexpected moments. I question myself rhetorically and ask how I can separate myself from other photographers, how can I capture something differently? I take time to observe and study, looking for unique opportunities to grasp a slice of a moment that creates a sensation, that you can hear the music through the photo, or feel the movement. I also pay attention to the humanistic side of the artists, bringing them closer to the phenomena they are. I am especially interested in attempting to understand how people can possibly relate to the images personally."

"I have a passion for documenting all the ‘behind the scenes journey’ as it brings forward other characteristics of the artists in question as they are hard at work. In a nutshell, you will always find me with a camera in hand, climbing stages (sometimes falling off...) or getting lost in the exploration and nuance of countries! The role of a tour manager involves a lot of other administrative duties and technical responsibilities including sound checks, the overall show design including visuals & pyro coordination, as well as a few technical arrangements with the set up itself. It also includes the overall management for the tour whilst making sure we get to the right country every day!"

Wow, thats a lot of responsibility, but sounds awesome! How did you get to this position?

"I began taking an interest in photography at a young age. It started to grow when I became involved in a variety of events. I was exposed to the performing arts growing up through my mother who plays an influential role in the growth of contemporary dance in Malta. This exposed me to many events as I accompanied her to many venues and watched her creative process, which led me to the importance of the effects of the ‘behind the scenes documenting’. This is as valid as the actual performance itself. You get to see things the audience never does. It was a secret between me and my camera which I took everywhere with me and I was allowed to take photos."

"One aspect I learnt early is never to be seen or felt whilst taking photos. The importance of blending creates a more realistic working environment and this allows me to capture the true nature of things. Later on, I attended many music clubs and festivals, experimenting on a different level with this particular type of work which required other forms of thought and preparation and pushed me to see things through a different lens!"

"With reference to the music end of things, I was noticed by a couple of major key promoters in the music and festival industry who recognised my work when I started capturing moments in small clubs, eventually entrusting me with major festivals in Malta. On a personal level, as a growing adolescent, I sacrificed many nights to always try and go to venues to shoot international artists that were invited over to the island to practice and develop what would eventually become my style. This I continue to nurture on a daily basis and never take any moment for granted as it’s a capture lost. I missed many parties growing up and fun nights with my friends, but it was all worth it in the end and I feel lucky to have friends who understand this!"

What would you say is the best part of the job?

"I look forward to the opportunity of getting more than seven hours in a country. When I do, I love to take some time to explore the city, even if it prevents me from getting sleep. I love to capture at least a slice of the essence of a city. It was always a dream to travel to the largest festivals in the world, and even more so heading them! The most exciting part is, whilst visiting the various countries, meeting interesting and professional people within the music industry. Of course, there are the perks such as riding in private jets to hop from one show to another as quickly as possible! However, the one most important factor for me is when my work gets recognised and appreciated by the artists themselves."

Finally, what has been the highlight so far?

"I have many special moments as each performance in a specific venue or country has a story to tell. But the one that comes to mind which was extraordinary is an event we did in Asia. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I actually experienced it. I remember the artists I was working for at the time were booked to play at two private events. The scenery, production, food and sound were unimaginable! The extent of the expense paid for this private venue was extravagant. Another event that is also memorable was taking control of Tomorrowland’s main stage. This is always a highlight, especially since there was a crowd of 100,000 people in front of the artists I work for and millions online live streaming the event. It’s one of the most stressful shows of the summer, but extremely rewarding, it’s a great sense of satisfaction after."

Wow! Thank You Emma and we can't wait to see what's next in store for you on tour!
