Do you remember Xemxija’s red-domed church?
The bright dome that once stood tall over Fekruna Bay.

Francesca Vella

If you ever drove up Xemxija Hill in the 1960s through to the 1980s, chances are you remember the striking sight of a red-domed church perched above Fekruna Bay. This was the original St Joseph the Worker Church – a uniquely round-shaped building that served as a prominent local landmark.

The church was first built in 1959 and quickly became a visual icon in the area, with its bold dome standing out along the hillside. For many, it became a nostalgic part of the Xemxija skyline, evoking memories of summer drives, Sunday outings, and family visits.

However, in 1988, the original structure had to be demolished after the land beneath it began to recede. Though the loss was felt by many locals and visitors alike, the spirit of the place lived on.

In 1993, a new church dedicated to St Joseph the Worker was built on the same site, continuing the tradition of worship and community on Xemxija Hill. While the design changed, the church remains a symbolic spot, linking past to present, and reminding us of the shifting landscapes of Malta’s built heritage.

Any memories of the red dome?
