Eight decades ago! Check out this old photo showing Cathedral Street during the Sliema feast
What a throwback!

Lyndsey Grima

This remarkable photograph offers a glimpse into Cathedral Street in Sliema during the feast of Our Lady Star of the Sea (Sella Maris) around 80 years ago. The bustling street is beautifully decorated with traditional festa lights, banners and flags, while residents and visitors gather to enjoy one of the town's most cherished celebrations.

The image captures a simpler era, when religious feasts were expressions of faith but also important social occasions that brought entire communities together. Children, families and neighbours filled the streets, creating a vibrant atmosphere that remains at the heart of Maltese village life today.

Many of the buildings and iconic enclosed wooden balconies visible in the photograph still reflect Sliema's architectural heritage, offering a connection between the past and present.

This fascinating snapshot from the Carmel Vella Collection preserves a treasured moment in Sliema's history and serves as a reminder of the enduring traditions that continue to define Malta's festa culture.

Do you remember a similar Sliema?
