We’re sorry in advance for possibly breaking your diet.
After a heavy Christmas season in the food department, most of us are probably hardcore dieting or at least watching what we eat. If so, your cravings are at an all time high, possibly even smelling chocolate or anything fatty when it comes withing 100m of your surroundings. We bet these eight Maltese foods are on your cravings list.
1. Nanna’s prinjolata
With Carnival right around the corner, Nanna’s prinjolata is one we are totally looking forward to. While recipes vary, we’re definitely ready to lick off that icing (once we finish dieting of course).
2. Serkin pastizzi
Oof. This is a major one we miss. After a night out, we love heading up to the popular pastizzeria in Rabat and indulging in these babies at 4am. But those calories are a nono and we’re not even having nights out because booze is a nono, too. We’ll just have to wait until we’re done with this diet.
3. Crunchy timpana
Mamma mia, the cravings are REAL. This soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside local dish has our taste buds tingling. We’re counting down the days until we can get a load of this one.
4. Imqaret
Ah, the date-filled squares that fill our hearts (and tummies) with the gooiness needed to keep on living. Same said gooiness is what caused us to hit the gym and diet this January. #RIPSummerBody
5. Perlini
These sugar-coated almonds are another Carnival delicacy on the Maltese Islands, but one that falls in the love ‘em or hate ‘em category. The hard ass sweets have the potential of breaking off a tooth or two, but they’re totally worth the fight.
6. A Cisk
While not categorised in the food group per se, it's still something we crave. All we ask for is a nice cold beer on a Saturday afternoon. Is that too much to ask? Apparently this diet thinks so. We’ll come back, baby. We’ll never forget you.
7. The iconic ftira
Our mouths are drooling just thinking about this. A crunchy Maltese ftira filled with tuna, gbejna, sundried tomatoes, capers, beans, and olives is just what will get us through the week. Uwejja, coach. Gidma biss!
8. Maltese platter jifqa’
Ahhh! A platter filled with delish local cheeses, cured meats, beans, sundried tomatoes, Maltese sausage and bigilla is speaking to our SOUL. Is this diet over yet?
Excuse us while we wipe away the drool.
