Development proposals for Wied Ghomor: what has fate got in store for the valley?
Wied Ghomor is in trouble again, and can't seem to catch a break! Last May, two development proposals at Wied Ghomor were left up in the air, resulting in continual development pressures in the valley.
Originally, a 100-unit development, catering establishment and the addition of a road from San Gwann through the valley was refused, according to Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar. In a post on their website, the organisation stated that “the site of the proposed development lies partly in a disused quarry which is slowly being reclaimed by nature and partly in Wied Ghomor’s protected green area. The site is completely surrounded by terraced fields and rubble walls, providing a rare unobstructed agricultural landscape in the built-up areas of San Gwann, St Julian's and Swieqi.”
As events unfold, both St Julian’s and Swieqi Local Councils are pressuring the Planning Authority to refuse the application proposing the development of a guesthouse. As reported by the Independent earlier this month, the councils said that “the site is outside the development zone, a protected valley and an area of high landscape sensitivity.”
The valley is situated smack between two highly urbanised areas, making it one of the few remaining green lungs in the surrounding areas. “Besides agricultural functions, it also serves as a water catchment area and a source of irrigation water. The protection of such areas is laid down in the Strategic Plan for the Environment and the relative Local Plan.”
Saving Wied Ghomor – No to Quarry and other Development took to Facebook objecting to the proposal that currently proposes the “demolition of existing residence and reconstruction of a new one on the same footprint, swimming pool and other landscaping works,” as per application PA06493/19. The page says (as also listed in the application) that the proposal is Outside Development Zone and motions for it to be refused.
In whose hands will Wied Ghomor fall? Only time will tell…
