Development proposal for Magro brothers’ old factory in Gozo has sparked controversy
The demolition project hasn’t been green lit yet.

Wirt Ghawdex has recently announced that “more destruction” is taking place in Gozo, this time in Rabat. The NGO pointed out a development proposal that plans to replace the old Magro Factory.

“Two old houses are scheduled to be demolished,” the NGO said, also emphasising that the buildings are within UCA (Urban Conservation Area). Wirt Ghawdex are opposing the development proposal saying the houses have “evident vernacular value and their demolition is not acceptable.” They are urging the public to “protect what is left of our townscapes.”

The proposal, which is currently suspended and has not been green lit yet, states that it will “demolish existing building as phase 1 of a redevelopment project.” The applicant of the project is John Magro from Magro Brothers (Estates) Ltd, who happens to be one of the sons of the original founders of the Magro Brothers’ first tomato factory on Malta’s sister isle.

Locals who commented on Wirt Ghawdex’s post had varied responses, some agreeing that yes, they should be preserved, while other think they don’t seem to be worth it and something else could easily be built instead of them and could be of better use.

What’s your take on the sitch?
