Decades-old photo shows a different side to Sliema’s Tower Road
No shop seen in the photo still exists today.

Heading to Tower Road, Sliema nowadays will show you a completely different sight to the one pictured below…

Yet, this is the very same road that is presently frequented by thousands of cars, commuters, shoppers, and tourists on a daily basis.

Believed to have been shot sometime in the 1950s, the cars in this photo look vastly different to the ones we’re used to at present. Apart from that, no high-rise buildings or cranes can be spotted anywhere in the picture.

Tower Road’s surrounding infrastructure is also pretty unrecognisable, with a vast majority of the pictured shops and establishments having undergone radical changes.

One thing that connects the present-day version of Tower Road to the one pictured is the traffic.

This area has always been (and will probably always be) synonymous with heavy traffic. In fact, a traffic warden can be spotted right in the middle of the shot, guiding cars to prevent accidents.

Do you remember Sliema looking like this?
