Plans for a 133-foot pier have been met with criticism.
Comino - particularly Blue Lagoon - has always been one of Malta’s most popular destinations, but the influx of tourists (as well as locals) experienced in recent years has left the island’s resources a little exhausted. Plans for the construction of a new pier have recently been submitted by the Ministry for Gozo, and now that we’ve seen them, we’re not quite sure what to think.
Comino’s infrastructural reworking has been in the pipeline for years, but recent proposals have met with criticism. Designs for a suggested 133-foot pier just outside the perimeter of Blue Lagoon’s swimming area have been slammed by watchdogs. They insist that the plan interferes too much with the natural landscape and that if it were to be approved, it would effectively destroy all there is to love about the island.
The proposal also includes the resurfacing of a pre-existing 1km-long trail leading unto the pier.
The PA had already rejected a similar proposal of a permanent structure over a decade ago, citing visual and ecological damage as the reason behind its refusal of the plan. Here’s hoping we can still enjoy Comino’s natural beauty in summer 2020!
PA, we really need you to pull through on this one!
