Could Malta's airport really reopen by end of May? This popular UK newspaper suggests so
Article also suggests restaurants and hotels may reopen in early June.
The Guardian, a UK newspaper, has today issued an article in which travel arrangements in several countries across Europe were discussed and compared. Among the states mentioned is Malta, with the article hinting that an end-of-May airport reopening could be in the books.
The article highlights Malta's current travel-related restictions: " All arrivals must currently self-isolate for 14 days. Masks mandatory in shops and on public transport," it said. It also made reference to more measures which may be lifted: "Some non-essential shops are open; bars, restaurants and hotels may open by early June."
While no date for the border and airport repoening has been announced for non-essential travel and tourists, the article speculates that: "The airport could reopen by the end of May." This comes in the wake of news that Ryanair is selling end-of-May flights to and from Malta.
It had earlier been warned by health authorities that the airport would be the last business to reopen after COVID-19, however pressure from the tourism and hospitality industries could see the reopening pushed forward.
Currently, talks to allow 'safe corridors' of travel between Malta and nine other countries is being discussed.
