The 1960s were very formative years for the Maltese islands, as they saw thousands of citizens packing up their belongings and moving to other Commonwealth countries in hopes of building a better life.

An image uploaded to social media by John C. Navarro shows a number of families at Strada Reale’s Palazzo Spinola, which formerly served as the Immigration Office, contemplating a future overseas.

“Maltese families, looking through various leaflets trying to decide their future in another country. It was a time when many Maltese [people] felt the need to leave their homeland to better themselves,” John captioned the image.

“I personally went through the process in 1968, immigrating to England, My father, John Navarro, can be seen sitting at his desk slightly to the left, just below the steps, working as a Civil Servant in this Government Department,” he continued.

Did any your family members leave the country during the 1960s?
