If you are spending the festive season in Malta, there is no better way to ring in the New Year than by joining the celebrations in the heart of the capital, Valletta. Malta Public Transport will be providing special services for the national New Year’s Eve event taking place on 31st December at St George’s Square – excellent news for anyone wishing to enjoy the night without worrying about the journey there or back.

Valletta is already enchanting at this time of year, glowing with twinkling lights, festive decorations and a cheerful warmth that fills its narrow, historic streets. But on New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere becomes even more exciting. The national event is completely free and offers an evening of music, live performances and entertainment by some of Malta’s top artists, drawing crowds from across the islands.

As midnight approaches, the energy intensifies. Leading Maltese DJs take over with a high-tempo mix accompanied by striking stage lighting and effects. The night will reach its peak shortly after midnight, with a performance by international star John Newman.

If fireworks are more your style, the celebration also features a spectacular midnight display over the Grand Harbour. Watching the sky ignite above one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic harbours is an unforgettable way to experience the first moments of the year.

To make the evening even smoother for visitors and locals alike, Malta Public Transport will be operating additional late-night services across the island. Sixteen regular routes and five night routes will run extra journeys well into the early hours, giving passengers plenty of time to enjoy the festivities and travel back safely. Departure times vary by route, but all services have been planned to ensure passengers can reach Valletta terminus without rushing.

Malta Public Transport is adding thirteen direct trips from Valletta to Buġibba on the S12 route, ensuring a quicker and more convenient journey for those travelling to the northern coast. Other localities served by these extended routes include Paola, Isla, Bormla and Kalkara on Route S10, as well as Msida, St Julian’s, Pembroke, Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and Buġibba via the regular S12 route, and Imsida, Gżira, Sliema and St Julian’s on the N13 night service.

Beyond these routes, the extended services will cover a wide geographic spread reaching, Birkirkara, Lija, Balzan, Mosta, Mġarr and Manikata on S40, and the North Coast including St Paul’s Bay, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa on S41. Additional connections will run to Fleur de Lys, Rabat, Mtarfa and Dingli on Routes S51 and S52, as well as Ħamrun, Qormi, Żebbuġ and adjacent areas on S61 and night routes like N62, linking diverse localities back to the capital after the festivities. Passengers therefore have frequent options to reach their homes from Valletta long after the New Year countdown.

Passengers can purchase a €3 ticket directly on-board using cash or contactless payment, making it an easy, stress-free option on a night when the streets are busy, parking is limited, and fun is the priority.

Whether you are heading to Valletta for a dazzling New Year’s Eve celebration or exploring Malta throughout your holiday, Malta Public Transport offers an easy, affordable and enjoyable way to get around. Check Malta Public Transport’s website for route details and updates – then simply sit back, relax and enjoy all that Malta has to offer.
