Carnival cancelled! Strong winds bring Valletta’s celebrations to a halt
Safety first!

Carnival revellers hoping for a final evening of excitement in the capital have been left disappointed tonight as strong winds forced organisers to pull the plug on key festivities.

Following consultation with civil authorities amid the current weather conditions, Festivals Malta announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated Grand Defilé in St Anne Street, Floriana, as well as the evening programme scheduled for St George’s Square in Valletta.

The decision was taken in the interest of public safety, as gusty winds posed a risk to performers, crew members and the thousands of spectators who had gathered to enjoy the spectacle. With towering floats, elaborate costumes and technical set-ups involved, organisers opted not to take any chances.

Despite the cancellation, Carnival enthusiasts can still catch a glimpse of the impressive floats, which will remain parked at St James Ditch until approximately 9:30pm. Once the wind is expected to subside, the floats will begin making their way back to their respective warehouses.

While the premature end to tonight’s celebrations has dampened spirits, safety remains the top priority. Carnival may be about colour, chaos and creativity – but when nature steps in, even the biggest party in town has to pause.
