Now, this is something! For the first time ever, a Gozitan wine producer will be exporting 9,000 bottles of DOK (Denominazzjoni ta’ Origini Kontrollata) Gozo wine to Japan!
Ta’ Mena Estate produces wines characterised by the ‘island effect’, whose blends are bursting with flavour, so it’s no wonder that such a large amount of local wine is being shipped off to Asia.
The estate includes a fruit garden, an olive grove with about 1,500 olive trees, an orange grove, and over 10 hectares of vineyards. And naturally, it boasts panoramic views of Gozo’s Citadel and the surroundings hills and villages.
Local wine producer Joe Spiteri explains that the company grows vines to ensure particular Gozitan characteristics. Both Malta and Gozo have been producing quality wines of distinction over the years, which have also been recognised by the European Union.
During the past two years, the Wines of Distinction campaign was launched to bring awareness, attention and interest to locally produced DOK Malta, DOK Gozo and IGT (Indikazzjoni Geografica Tipika) Maltese Islands wines. Ultimately, this campaign was created to instill awareness and appreciation on the Maltese Islands towards the hard work put in to create good quality local wine.
