Now isn’t this something? A local shared quite the gem in a Maltese history Facebook group yesterday and it’s giving us all the nostalgic feels.

The flyer reads that is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the influential (and Zebbug-born) Dun Mikiel Xerri, to be celebrated on Sunday 26th September 1937.

The poster includes a message to the Zebbugin and a programme of events curated by the committee. “The day has finally come to remember and remind all of Malta of one of her most glorious children, the patriot Dun Michiel Xerri, who for love of religion and country gave his life courageously,” it reads roughly.

It is interesting to note that the language has some variations to the one we use nowadays, mainly the use of the ‘c’ (a letter non-existent in the Maltese alphabet) instead of ‘k’ in words like cumitat instead of kumitat, or Michiel instead of Mikiel. It’s seems to be very much influenced by the Italian Romantic language. Interestingly though, the letter ‘k’ is being used instead of ‘q’ in words such as iskof which is meant to be spelled as isqof (bishop).

Have you ever come across anything like this?
