By candlelight and steel! Decrès sword gifted by Napoleon to debut in Birgu this May
Heritage Malta’s much-loved Museums by Candlelight returns on Saturday 10th May, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore some of Malta’s most storied sites after dark. This year’s edition comes with a particularly exciting reveal – the first-ever public exhibition of a Napoleonic sword of honour, awarded in 1800 by Napoleon himself to Rear Admiral Denis Decrès, a key figure in one of Malta’s most violent naval battles.
Recently acquired by Heritage Malta, the sword was present during the dramatic destruction of the French fleet in Maltese waters. Now, it will be displayed at the Malta Maritime Museum, where visitors can view it before the museum temporarily closes at the end of the month for restoration.
The evening promises more than just artefacts, however. Guests will be able to wander through the softly lit interiors of the Malta Maritime Museum, Inquisitor’s Palace, and Fort St Angelo, all bathed in the warm glow of candlelight and enriched by live performances.
At the Maritime Museum, the exhibition ‘An Island at the Crossroads’ offers a glimpse into Malta’s strategic role in the Mediterranean, while curators provide insights into some of the key artefacts on display, including the Decrès sword. Meanwhile, over at the Inquisitor’s Palace, exhibitions like ‘Fare Convito’ and ‘Threads of Faith’ delve into Malta’s traditions of feasting and faith during the Hospitaller period.

And as the candlelight flickers, the experience is made even more memorable with live music drifting through the halls – from traditional folk tunes to intimate instrumental sets that enhance the historical atmosphere.
Will you be there?
