Big news! Malta set to officially recognise Valletta as capital through constitutional amendment
This news also coincides with a separate proposal to commemorate National Anthem Day on 27th December.
A new legislative initiative has been introduced in Malta’s House of Representatives to officially recognise Valletta as the nation’s capital city within the Constitution. Despite serving for centuries as Malta’s administrative and cultural hub, Valletta has never been explicitly defined as the capital in the country’s supreme law.
The proposal follows a 2023 suggestion by MP Cressida Galea, who called for a national discussion on addressing this constitutional gap.
The newly drafted amendment aims to rectify the omission by granting Valletta explicit constitutional status. Lawmakers are also recommending that the change be entrenched through a two-thirds parliamentary majority, ensuring long-term legal protection for the city’s designation.
This recognition would provide Valletta with the constitutional standing it merits and reflect both a respect for Malta’s historical roots and a commitment to preserving national identity and pride.

Valletta hosts around 60,000 workers, visitors and tourists each day which makes this news more than appropriate!
Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay praised the amendment as a milestone for the capital, describing it as a tribute to its remarkable heritage and an important step toward building a sustainable, long-term vision for future generations.
