The Maltese Islands are known for its abundance of sunshine and variety of bays for beach-goers to choose from once the summer heat kicks in. A number of popular bays are known by their English name, but did you know their Maltese correspondent?

Local Facebook page 'Il-Malti Madwarna' that encourages the usage of the Maltese language in various parts of the island shared a list of beach names in both Maltese and English. “In order for these beautiful names to be remembered, us Maltese need to start using them,” they said, urging entities to possibly include the Maltese names on road signs.

The page, with the help of a certain Alex Camilleri, put together the below list of local bays with their corresponding names in Maltese. Did you know that Blue Lagoon is called Bejn il-Kmiemen, Blue Grotto is called Il-Hnejja, and Slugs Bay is known as Dahlet ix-Xilep? We had no clue! While it would take a little getting used to, having these Maltese become common practice is a great idea!
