The Emergency Response Rescue Corps has issued a serious warning for today, as rough seas and high waves make swimming dangerous across most of Malta and Gozo. Double red flags are currently being flown at many popular beaches, signalling that swimming is strictly prohibited.
According to the Corps, the Mediterranean is very rough today, with waves expected to reach up to 2 metres in height. The powerful swell and strong currents pose a significant threat, even for strong swimmers.
If you're heading to the beach, please follow these essential safety tips:
- Do not enter the water at double red flag beaches
- Keep children well away from the shoreline
- Respect red flag warnings and safety signage
- Follow lifeguard instructions at all times
These are the beaches reported as SAFE (with caution):
While the following beaches are currently considered safe, conditions can change rapidly. Exercise extreme caution, especially if swimming with children:
Malta: Mellieħa, Mistra Bay, St. Paul’s Bay, Rinella Bay, Marsaskala, St Thomas Bay, Ħofriet, Marsaxlokk, Pretty Bay, St George’s Bay

Even in these zones, never underestimate the power of currents. Swim close to shore and within designated swimming areas.
