As Sicily battles a bout of extreme weather, Malta’s meteorological stations are gearing up for what could be the islands' first proper storm of October 2022.
A video shared to social media by MeteoNews24 shows intense flooding taking hold of the Sicilian town of Castelvetrano after it was hit by strong overnight thunderstorms.

Further thunderstorms are expected to hit Sicily throughout the week, with local Facebook page ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ noting that weather warnings have been issued for the entirety of the neighbouring island.

“[The thunderstorm system] could expand in the direction show by the arrows over the coming hours. As things stand, parts of this may affect the Maltese islands at some point between late morning and late afternoon,” Maltese Islands Weather warned.
“Everything may still change, as the stormy systems are very dynamic by nature. This would be our chance of rain for today, in an otherwise cloudy day,” it continued.

With that being said, the Malta International Airport’s meteorological station is forecasting thundery showers for today, alongside temperature highs and lows of 25°C and 21°C.
Similarly, Facebook page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’ is predicting an 85 per cent chance of rain and a 65 per cent chance of thunderstorms to hit the islands today.
