If you love theatre, you’re in luck – our October calendar never sleeps.
Finally I am back in my element: there is a theatre performance to be found round every corner this month.
Yes, after a lull of activity over the summer, the theatres are now back to bursting point with one must-see production after another. So, if you love culture and are hoping to see something worthy of your time while on the island, look no further. This is our pick of the English-language October theatre that you won’t want to miss.
US/Them
The Splendid Strada Stretta – 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13 (6pm and 8pm), 14 October
Emma Micallef
In a first for Malta, this award-winning play by Carly Wijs comes to The Splendid – an ex-hotel oozing with character, and which deserves a visit in its own right. In this production by The Shrinking Violets, it sets the scene for a fast-paced, poignant and physical piece that remembers the Beslan Siege of 2004 that left over 330 people dead, including 186 children. Directed by Chiara Hyzler and starring Maria Buckle and Jacob Piccinino, this hour-long piece is guaranteed to leave an impact – both for its subject matter and its powerful presentation.
Jew of Malta
Teatru Manoel – 5-7, 12-14 October
Justin Mamo
The Jew of Malta may be one of Christopher Marlowe’s lesser known plays, but it is the only one to be set in Malta (and one of the few plays in the world to mention the island in its title!). Directed by Chris Gatt, it tells the story of an amoral philosopher who believed that the end always justifies the means. It brings together characters from the three major monotheistic faiths, and roundly condemns all three. Even hundreds years after it was first performed, it remains a revolutionary play that stings and hurts even as it entertains.
De-Terminated: The Abortion Diaries
Spazju Kreattiv Main Theatre – 19-21, 26-28 October
Abortion remains a very controversial issue in Malta and is illegal. In this dynamic new play by top Maltese journalist Herman Grech, the characters pose the question: should we at least talk about it? Presented in the form of fast-paced monologues from seven very different characters, this highly-anticipated play is bound to raise eyebrows and encourage debate. It provides an opportunity to engage with one of the most contentious conversations currently raging on the island, and to determine what you think about it.
Amadeus
Teatru Manoel – 19-21, 26-28 October
In an opportunity to see our glorious national theatre in all its Baroque glory, Masquerade Theatre Company revives one of its most successful productions of all time – Amadeus. Bringing to life the rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, this play-with-music first wowed audiences in 1979 and has continued to tour internationally ever since. A guaranteed laugh-out-loud, high energy night at the theatre starring some of the island’s best, including Manuel Cauchi and Thomas Camilleri.
