Another sand replenishment project incoming! This time for Birzebbuga’s St George’s Bay
It’s the same project that was done at Balluta Bay last summer.
Another beach on the Maltese Islands is set to be replenished, just like Balluta beach. St George’s Bay in Birzebbuga will undergo the same replenishment treatment as Balluta, in the hope of regenerating sand to form a larger beach for the summer months, at least.

Last summer, Balluta Bay was replenished with dredged up sand from the bay, to see whether the beach could regenerate sand on its own... as it should. And for a while, it worked. The beach instantly became popular, and many people flocked there over the summer months to soak up some sun.

However, once the rougher seas hit our shores, the question on everyone’s minds was ‘what would become of it?’ Malta had quite a wild winter, especially with that insane storm on 24th February, which, naturally, affected the shores. Marine biologist Adrian Mallia had explained what happened to the beach during this time. “The storm destroyed the system, which wasn’t a surprise. However, right up until the day before the storm, the beach was still there and thriving,” he said.

So, had it not been for the freak weather, Balluta Bay would most probably still been here today. The Malta Tourism Authority is proposing an increase in width of the sandy beach at Birzebbuga by recovering sand from the seabed inside the bay. MTA is stressing that the beach is expected to disappear over time, unless other re-nourishment exercises are repeated in later years.
