By now, any local film fanatic is probably familiar with Maltese-American writer-director Alex Camilleri's work.

Following the resounding success of Luzzu, Alex is back with what seems to be yet another masterpiece - ‘Zejtune’.

This feature has just bagged the Sam Spiegel International Film Lab Grand Prize, consisting of $50,000.

The award was given to Alex himself, together with his producers - Rebecca Anastasi and Ramin Bahrami.

Like his previous feature, this film also features Maltese personalities and real artists from the Maltese folk scene. ‘Zejtune’ follows a 30-year-old woman whose life is rejuvenated by an encounter with an elderly troubadour.

Alex's debut feature 'Luzzu' premiered at Sundance 2021, where lead actor Jesmark Scicluna took home a Special Jury Award. Camilleri received the ‘Someone To Watch’ title at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, held later that year.
