The organisation's first restoration was the Chapel of Ħal Millieri in February 1968.
Today, 9th July 2025, Malta proudly celebrates a major milestone: 60 years of Din l-Art Ħelwa, the National Trust of Malta. For six decades, this dedicated non-governmental, voluntary organisation has been at the forefront of preserving what makes our islands so unique – from historic chapels to natural landscapes.
Founded in 1965, Din l-Art Ħelwa has grown from a grassroots initiative into one of Malta’s most respected heritage organisations. Its mission has remained clear and urgent: to safeguard Malta’s historic, artistic, and natural heritage – a mission that resonates now more than ever in the face of modern development and environmental challenges.
The organisation’s very first restoration project began in February 1968, when a group of young volunteers that called themselves the ‘Teenagers Din l-Art Ħelwa’, began clearing the Chapel of the Annunciation in Ħal Millieri, Żurrieq. Over thirteen truckloads of rubble were removed by hand – now there’s a labour of love! The restoration uncovered pieces of pottery, carved stone, coins, and other artefacts, and laid the foundation for what would become a long-standing tradition of conservation.
By 1970, a formal trust was established for the chapel with the help of the Żurrieq Council, and Din l-Art Ħelwa was officially entrusted with its management, marking the beginning of many partnerships with local communities.
Over the decades, Din l-Art Ħelwa has restored and managed dozens of cultural sites, championing causes that protect not only buildings and monuments but also natural habitats, biodiversity, and the integrity of Malta’s towns and villages. Their advocacy has shaped policies, pushed for stronger laws, and raised public awareness about the importance of conservation in a rapidly changing world.
As it celebrates 60 years of achievements, Din l-Art Ħelwa took to social media to extend thanks to all its volunteers, supporters, and members who made this journey possible.
Congratulations to Din l-Art Ħelwa on six decades of hard work!
