Above the harbour! Discover the peace and history of Gozo’s Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes
The story of the chapel dates back to 1879.
Located high on a promontory overlooking the busy Mġarr Harbour, the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands as one of Gozo’s most serene and scenic spiritual landmarks. From its elevated position, the chapel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Gozo Channel, with the Island of Malta visible across the shimmering blue waters, creating a setting that feels both peaceful and awe-inspiring.
The chapel is easily accessible, whether on foot or by car, from Mġarr Harbour or from the nearby village of Għajnsielem. Its tranquil surroundings make it a popular destination for those seeking a quiet place for prayer, reflection, or simply a moment of stillness away from daily life. Visitors often describe a sense of calm that comes from the harmony between nature, faith, and history found at this site.
The story of the chapel dates back to 1879, when a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, sculpted by the Maltese artist Antonio Busuttil, was placed within a natural cave on the promontory. The statue was blessed on 3 June 1888 by Bishop Pietro Pace, who encouraged the faithful to construct a chapel around this sacred space. Just a week later, the foundation stone was laid, marking the beginning of a project driven by devotion and community spirit.
The chapel opened its doors in 1893 and was later consecrated in 1949. Each year, on 11 February, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated, commemorating the first apparition at Lourdes. On this day, devotees from across Gozo gather here for Mass and prayer, keeping alive a tradition of faith that continues to inspire generations.
