Abandoned Comino pig farm pictured in a totally neglected state a decade after closing
It was built in 1979 to restock pigs after a swine flu outbreak destroyed the local pig population.

Built in the late '70s, Comino was once home to a fully-fledged pig breeding farm, tasked with replacing stock after an African Swine Fever outbreak wiped out most of the pig population on the Maltese islands.

Its purpose veered over the years and in 2011 the handful of animals left there were transferred to another farm in Malta and the Comino farm ceased to operate. The pig farmers’ cooperative was tasked with the area's clean-up but the place has been abandoned and left in a state of complete disarray.

The state of abandon can be observed in recent pictures captured by photographer Glen Slattery. Venturing to Comino in search of the farm, Glen admits that while he knew about its existance, there had been very little photo evidence to back it up.

With his camera in tow, Glen and his partner visited the farm. Looking back at the experience, Glen says: "I noted that the pigs might have not been living their best life. I was impressed cause in some pig pens there were a lot of deep scratches in the stone," the photographer recounts.

In other photos, paperwork used to document pig stocks at the farm lies strewn about on the floor, some still legible.

The building has been handed back to the government, and several public calls have been made over the years for it to be restored and converted into a tourism project.
