This timeless piece was created by renowned Maltese clockmaker, Gaetano Vella.
Time stands tall at the heart of Valletta, where history and craftsmanship meet at the Grandmaster’s Palace.
Commissioned in 1745 by Grandmaster Pinto, the iconic palace clock in Prince Alfred’s Courtyard remains one of Malta’s finest examples of baroque engineering and artistry.
Created by renowned Maltese clockmaker Gaetano Vella, this historic timepiece is far more than a typical clock. It features four intricately designed faces that display not just the hour, but also the day, month, and lunar phase - a remarkable blend of function and sophistication.
Adding to its charm are four bronze jacquemarts, or striking figures, which move with rhythmic precision to chime the passing hours. These animated figures not only mark time but also bring the courtyard to life, echoing centuries of tradition.
The palace clock stands as a symbol of Malta’s rich cultural and mechanical heritage, attracting both locals and visitors with its timeless elegance.
This extraordinary creation reminds us that even time itself can be a work of art.
