The improving strategy

The strategy will cover a 10-year period and will see around €30 million invested in new sport facilities in various locations, as well as €6 million invested in athlete training, including bringing foreign coaches to Malta to help raise the bar locally in different sporting disciplines by 2020.

This investment of €36 million will be over and above the annual €11 million granted to SportMalta. The new investment will come from the citizenship scheme fund.

The new strategy aims for Malta to compete in various sports sectors and at all levels, with the first targets being 2023, the year Malta will be hosting the Small Nations games. This will be a stepping stone for local athletes to compete in the Mediterranean games and the Commonwealth games.
