Gozo was commended for delivering a comprehensive and successful programme during its tenure.
The Port Region has been named Malta’s next Region of Culture, succeeding Gozo, whose term as the 2025 titleholder is drawing to a close.
Each year, the honour is passed to a different Maltese region, providing communities with an opportunity to celebrate their cultural heritage through a dedicated programme of artistic and community-focused events.
Now in its fourth edition, the Region of Culture initiative was established in 2022 with the aim of encouraging a deeper appreciation for Malta’s traditions and cultural identity. Throughout 2026, the Port Region will take centre stage with a series of activities highlighting its historical and cultural richness.
The region’s remarkable natural harbour was praised during the official ceremony, highlighting its significant archaeological sites, long-standing fortifications, and diverse religious and civic landmarks.
Every locality, large or small, brings its own story and set of values to Malta’s cultural landscape. The area’s growing tourism sector was also pointed out, attributing it to the dedication of local councils.
Additional cultural events tied to the initiative will be incorporated into the councils’ regular schedules over the next year. Gozo was also commended for delivering a comprehensive and successful programme during its tenure.
The Port Region comprises the localities of Birgu, Bormla, Isla, Kalkara, Valletta, Floriana, Xgħajra, Żabbar, Fgura, Paola and Tarxien.
