CNN Travel has once again celebrated the world’s most beloved baked goods in its feature ‘50 of the World’s Best Breads”’ a mouthwatering roundup that spans continents and cultures. Among the diverse selection, Malta proudly earns a spot with its cherished national loaf...Ħobż tal-Malti.

Described by CNN as having a ‘tawny crust’ that gives way to a ‘pillow-soft interior,’ this traditional Maltese sourdough embodies the island’s rustic charm and community spirit. Historically, Ħobż tal-Malti was baked in shared, wood-fired ovens that served as neighbourhood gathering points. Preparing the classic loaf was no small feat, often taking more than a day to perfect.

Though few Maltese families still bake their own bread today, Ħobż tal-Malti remains deeply symbolic of national identity. Beyond its culinary appeal, it holds a cultural resonance; as CNN highlights, the Maltese even use bread as a metaphor for character, asking, ‘x’ħobz jiekol dan?’, translated literally as, ‘what kind of bread does he eat?’ when trying to understand a person’s true nature.

From Italy’s ciabatta to Mexico’s pan de muerto, CNN Travel’s list celebrates the power of bread to connect communities and traditions.

With its golden crust, humble origins, and enduring cultural significance, Malta’s Ħobż tal-Malti stands proudly among the finest breads the world has to offer.
