If you’ve been feeling a little uninspired lately, this might just be your sign to make the most of the sun and step outside. A walk in nature can do wonders, and local bird photographer ‘Feathers over Malta’ has just given us the perfect reminder why.
The photographer recently captured a breathtaking image of a Cormorant (known locally as Margun), showcasing the bird’s striking presence and mesmerising eyes. Fun fact: cormorants are among the few bird species capable of moving their eyes, a feature that helps them hunt with precision. And judging by this photo, those eyes are nothing short of captivating.
Cormorants are a familiar sight in Malta during autumn and winter, typically migrating alone or in small groups. However, history records one remarkable moment – on 21 February 2001, an extraordinary flock of around 80 cormorants was spotted from Qawra, marking the largest flock ever recorded over the Maltese Islands.
These birds often rely on Malta’s protected wetlands, including Salina (Naxxar), Għadira (Mellieħa) and Simar (Xemxija) Nature Reserves, using them as feeding and resting grounds during migration. So if you find yourself visiting one of these spots over the upcoming weekend, keep your eyes peeled – you might just be lucky enough to witness a moment of utter beauty like this one.
